Polli Corporation

The Conserve Fratelli Polli Società Anonima, usually known simply Polli Company, was an Italian food company born in the center of Milan, in Italy.
It was one of the first European companies〔La riforma sociale, Volume 35'', 1924, Istituto confederale delle conserve alimentari'' "Italian Confederal Institute of canned food" among the 381 most big Italian food factory in 1924 certify the Fratelli Polli of Milano〕 allowing canning, during the harvest season, the surplus production of vegetables and fruits were made into a preserved product, to be eaten at any time of the year.〔L'industria italiana delle conserve alimentari, Volumi 1-2, 1925, la "Fratelli Polli di Milano" the first National Congress of the canning industry〕

The company was privately held, and remains in the five generation of Polli family ownership and control through administrators.
In 1932 Pietro Polli leave a legacy, along with some properties including the near building in via dell'Orso at number 8 in Milan, to his wife Giulia Brambilla and to the daughters Mara Polli and Elena Polli Barabino, who will entrust the leadership to his brother Emilio Polli what will become CEO for many decades.〔Ugo Bertone, Roberto Camagni, Marco Panara, ''La buone società: Milano industria'', Costa & Nolan, 1987〕
The entrepreneur Pietro Polli opened also a luxury grocery store for the resale of fancy food, offering a wide variety of food and household products, on the ground floor of another building owned by him, where he usually lived with the family, in the street that today have the name of Giuseppe Verdi at number 2 in Milan, near Piazza della Scala. Soon the stores becomes a meeting place for intellectuals, writers and musicians, like Giuseppe Verdi, Gabriele D' Annunzio, Arnaldo Fraccaroli, Dario Niccodemi, Renato Simoni that became frequent visitors.
The goods food of Polli Corporation were traveling often on boats rivers network "Naviglio Grande" that connected the commercial way between Milan and the Ticino, sometimes came to the port of Genoa. The goods were transported by special boats known with the name of "cobbie", pulled by 12 horses who traveled to the shore side streets of the canals.
The sister of Emilio, Elena, resident in Genoa where she married the art collector Aldo Barabino, think up the first pesto sauce packaged in the world, with special preservation organic methods and olive oil.
